Chronicle Entry Lifecycle

The Chronicle Entry Lifecycle defines the institutional journey of a canonical Chronicle Entry from identification of a qualifying Occurrence through Preservation Eligibility, drafting, supporting-record assembly, Verification, Validation, publication, maintenance, Correction, Versioning, and long-term historical preservation.

Lifecycle describes where an Entry is in its institutional journey. It does not replace Verification State, Publication State, Validation result, or other more specific institutional controls.

First Production Lifecycle

Chronicle's lifecycle has now been exercised through its first complete production path using CHR-2026-0001 Entry Version 1.

Publication did not end the lifecycle. CHR-2026-0001 now remains subject to maintenance, future Corrections or Versioning where materially necessary, Reverification, Revalidation, and long-term historical preservation.

Lifecycle Principle

Occurrence identified → Eligibility assessed → Entry created → Supporting records assembled → Verification → Validation → Publication Gate → Publication → Maintenance → Correction / Versioning when needed → Historical preservation

Not every Entry follows every step in exactly the same operational order, but the lifecycle should preserve the same institutional logic.

1. Occurrence Identified

A potentially significant Occurrence is identified for possible Chronicle preservation.

2. Preservation Eligibility Assessed

Chronicle determines whether the Occurrence qualifies for preservation under the Preservation Eligibility Model.

3. Entry Drafted

A Chronicle Entry is created using the canonical Entry Model and the applicable Event Type and Event-Type Profile.

4. Sources Linked

Required Source Records, authoritative references, and external Sources are linked or cited according to Chronicle Source rules.

5. Evidence / Provenance Assembled

Evidence, Provenance, Relationships, historical context, and material limitations are assembled to support review of the historical representation.

6. Verification Performed

Chronicle reviews its own historical representation for authoritative-reference, Source, date, Relationship, Evidence, Provenance, Historical Context, temporal, authority-boundary, and limitation consistency.

7. Validation Performed

Chronicle confirms that the Entry conforms structurally and procedurally to the governing schema, Controlled Values, identifier rules, and applicable profile.

8. Publication Gate Completed

After Validation PASS and CHR-VAL-011 Publication Readiness PASS, the separate Publication Gate approves or withholds the Entry for Publication.

9. Entry Published

When approved, Publication performs the state-changing action that places the Entry into its official public production state and records the publication timestamp.

10. Entry Maintained

Chronicle maintains durable references, availability, Relationships, Provenance, public representation, and supporting records over time.

11. Corrected / Versioned if Necessary

New information, discovered errors, changed Relationships, or material supporting information may require Correction, a new Entry Version, and Reverification.

12. Historically Preserved

Chronicle retains the Entry, its lineage, and its supporting historical context as part of the durable institutional record.

Retrospective Entry

The Occurrence may predate the Entry by months or years. Retrospective preservation follows the same lifecycle without rewriting the historical Event Date.

Lifecycle Is Not a Single Linear Workflow

The conceptual sequence establishes institutional order, but Entries may return to earlier review stages.

Published → New Evidence → Materiality Review → Correction / New Version where required → Reverification → Revalidation → Publication decision → Republished / maintained / withdrawn

Lifecycle and Controlled States

The Controlled Values Registry currently defines initial Lifecycle State values:

Draft · Active · Superseded · Withdrawn · Preserved

These values summarize lifecycle position. They do not encode every process step listed in this Lifecycle Model.

Draft

The Entry exists as a Chronicle record under development and has not yet completed the requirements necessary for ordinary active publication or maintenance.

Active

The Entry is an institutionally active Chronicle record. It may be published, maintained, reviewed, corrected, or updated through Versioning while retaining the same canonical identifier.

Superseded

A later Chronicle-owned record state or Entry has formally or materially replaced the earlier representation for a defined purpose.

Superseded does not mean deleted.

Withdrawn

Chronicle has withdrawn the Entry from ordinary active use or publication while retaining the identifier, lineage, reason, and historical record.

Preserved

The Entry is retained as durable historical memory after active operational handling has ended or stabilized.

Production experience should determine whether Preserved remains necessary as a distinct Lifecycle State or whether preservation is better modeled separately.

Lifecycle ≠ Verification State

An Active Entry may be Verified, Verified with Limitations, In Review, or Unresolved.

Lifecycle ≠ Publication State

An Active Entry may be Published or Not Published depending on publication rules.

Lifecycle ≠ Preservation Eligibility

Eligibility determines whether Chronicle should preserve the Occurrence. Lifecycle begins once Chronicle proceeds with institutional handling of an eligible Occurrence.

Correction and Version Loops

Correction and Versioning are normal lifecycle behavior, not exceptions that erase the earlier record.

Active Entry → Material Change → Correction / Version → Reverification → Revalidation where required → Continued maintenance

Withdrawal and Supersession

Withdrawal and Supersession should preserve historical identity and lineage. Chronicle identifiers are not recycled, and prior states should remain understandable.

Lifecycle and Publication

Publication is one lifecycle event, not the end of the Entry's institutional life. Published Entries remain subject to maintenance, Corrections, Versioning, Reverification, and long-term preservation.

Lifecycle and Historical Preservation

Chronicle should preserve enough lifecycle history to show how the Entry moved from initial preservation decision through later review, publication, correction, Versioning, withdrawal, supersession, or durable preservation.

The current record matters. The path to the current record also matters.

Lifecycle Principle

Chronicle should treat each Entry as a durable institutional record with a history of its own—not as a static page that becomes finished at publication.

Create carefully. Review explicitly. Maintain visibly. Preserve the lineage.
